What Is Audio Mixing?
Audio mixing is the art of balance—blending individual tracks into a cohesive, impactful song. During the mixing process, sounds are shaped, enhanced, and positioned within the stereo field to achieve clarity, depth, and emotional impact.
Professional mixing involves precise techniques such as volume and panning adjustments, EQ, compression, automation, and creative use of effects. Just as important as enhancing the best elements is removing what doesn’t serve the song. The result is a polished, well‑balanced track that’s fully prepared for the final step in production: mastering.
Why Should I Get My Music Mixed Professionally?
While mixing is partly a matter of taste, a professional mixing engineer brings objectivity, experience, and technical expertise that can elevate your track beyond what you can achieve on your own. A skilled engineer understands how to capture the vibe and tone you’re aiming for while enhancing clarity, balance, and impact.
With trained ears and high‑quality equipment, a professional can identify and fix issues that are easy to miss—especially after you’ve heard your song countless times. The result is a polished, cohesive mix that translates well across all listening systems and truly does your music justice.

Do I Really Need Mixing, Or Is Mastering Enough?
Mixing and mastering serve very different purposes, and one cannot replace the other. Mixing shapes and balances individual tracks—creating clarity, depth, and emotion—while mastering fine‑tunes the final stereo file for consistency and playback across all systems.
Mastering cannot fix a poorly mixed song or “create” a mix after the fact. Even a perfectly mastered track will fall short if the mix itself lacks balance or clarity. That’s why most of our clients choose our complete mixing and mastering service—to ensure their music reaches its full sonic potential from start to finish.
Which Files Are Suitable For Audio Mixing?
To achieve the best possible results, your audio files need to be properly prepared before mixing. For detailed guidelines on supported file formats, export settings, and best practices for session preparation, please visit the link below.
Should I Leave My Processing On My Tracks?
In most cases, it’s best to bypass processing on your tracks or stems before sending them for mixing. However, if certain processing is essential to your sound design or creative intent, you should absolutely leave it enabled.
If the processing was added solely for mixing, feel free to remove it and let us handle it professionally. You’re also welcome to request specific effects or processing styles—our engineers will handle the rest and ensure your vision is respected.
Can I Skip Mastering If It’s Included With Mixing?
Yes. While mastering is always included for free with our mixing services, you’re free to skip it if you prefer to use an external mastering engineer. Simply select the corresponding option on the checkout page, and we’ll deliver your final mix without mastering.
Do I Need To Book Mastering On Top Of Mixing?
No. When you book any of our mixing services, professional mastering is always included at no additional cost. There’s no need to book mastering separately unless you specifically prefer an external mastering service.
What Is a Rough Mix, And Should I Send One?
A rough mix is an early version of your song created before professional mixing. It reflects your vision for the track, including basic volume and panning decisions, as well as any essential creative processing.
Sending a rough mix is highly recommended, as it helps the mixing engineer understand your intended balance, vibe, and stereo placement—especially since you won’t be present during the session. That said, it’s not mandatory. Even an imperfect rough mix can be a valuable reference and guide the final mix in the right direction.
What Is A Reference Track, And Should I Send One?
A reference track is a professionally produced song or mix that serves as a sonic guideline for your project. It helps the mixing engineer understand the tone, balance, loudness, and overall vibe you’re aiming for.
Unlike a rough mix, a reference track is already fully mixed and mastered and translates well across all playback systems. If you provide one, we’ll carefully analyze its tone, dynamics, structure, and energy, then use those insights to guide the processing of your song—ensuring the final result aligns closely with your creative vision.
Mastering Service FAQ...

What Is Audio Mastering?
Audio mastering is the final step in music production, applied to the finished stereo mix. While mixing balances individual tracks, mastering refines the overall sound to ensure your music meets industry standards and is ready for release.
Handled by a professional engineer, mastering enhances clarity, width, and control while ensuring your track translates consistently across all playback systems. The process includes precise EQ, compression, stereo enhancement, and final limiting—balancing genre‑appropriate loudness, tone, and dynamics to deliver a polished, high‑quality file in a release‑ready format.
Why Should I Get My Music Mastered Professionally?
Mastering is one of the most critical stages in the production process—it can make or break a song. Professional mastering ensures your music translates flawlessly across all playback systems, from headphones to club sound systems.
With trained ears, technical expertise, and specialized tools, a mastering engineer delivers the polish, consistency, and loudness balance required for a professional release. The result is a final track that sounds cohesive, competitive, and ready for the world.

Do I Really Need Mastering, Or Is Mixing Enough?
Mixing and mastering serve different but equally important purposes. Mixing creates balance and clarity within the track, while mastering finalizes the song for release—ensuring it sounds polished, consistent, and translates perfectly across all playback systems.
Even a perfectly mixed track won’t reach its full potential without proper mastering. Mastering enhances overall tone, loudness, and cohesion, preparing the final stereo file for distribution. That’s why most of our clients choose our complete mixing and mastering service to achieve professional‑grade results from start to finish.
Which Files Are Suitable For Audio Mastering?
To achieve the best possible results, your mix needs to be properly prepared before mastering. For detailed guidelines on supported file formats, export settings, and best practices for session preparation, please visit the link below.
My Mix Is Limited - Can You Still Master It?
While an unlimited mix is always preferred for mastering, we can still work with a limited mix. Mastering a limited track requires a more precise, careful approach to avoid over‑compression and loss of dynamics.
Our engineers apply specialized techniques to preserve clarity, punch, and musicality while ensuring your track remains balanced and release‑ready. For the best possible results, we recommend providing an unlimited mix whenever available.
Do You Offer Stem Mastering?
Mixing Monster does not offer traditional stem mastering, which involves mastering multiple stem files separately. Instead, we provide professional stereo mastering from a single finalized stereo mix.
During mixing, we internally create and process stems to optimize balance and prepare your track for mastering. While this approach shares similarities with stem mastering, the final mastering stage is performed on the completed stereo file.
If you require your mixed stems for external stem mastering or other purposes, you can order the add-on “Mixed Stems Export” when booking your mixing service.

When & How Do I Need to Upload My Audio Files?
After placing your order, you’ll receive an email with a link to upload your audio files. In the upload form, you’ll be asked to provide key details about your project to help us understand your vision.
You can upload your files directly using our secure upload zone by dragging and dropping or browsing your computer until all files are fully uploaded. Alternatively, you may include a direct download link to your files (such as Dropbox or WeTransfer). Once the form is submitted, you’re all set, and we’ll take it from there.
Do I Need To Upload My Files Immediately After Ordering?
No. After placing your order, you’ll receive an email with an upload link, but you don't need to upload your files right away. If you plan to upload them later, simply let us know your expected timeline.
This flexibility is especially helpful if you’re still recording or booking multiple sessions. We do recommend uploading all files as soon as they’re ready and avoiding fragmented uploads whenever possible. Once we begin processing your material, adding or replacing files may incur an additional fee.
Are There Any Restrictions On Audio File Quantity, Size, Or Length?
You may upload as many audio files as your selected product allows. Rough mixes and reference tracks do not count toward this limit.
In general, you can upload up to 50 files per upload session, with each file up to 256 MB. There are no restrictions on the playtime or length of your audio files.
Can I Upload / Download DAW Project Files?
Mixing Monster does not accept DAW (digital audio workstation) project files. We work exclusively with exported audio files to ensure compatibility and a smooth workflow.
Likewise, we do not provide DAW project files for finished mixes or masters. All delivered files are high‑quality audio files ready for use, distribution, or further processing.
Can I Send A Download Link To My File Archive?
Yes. After placing your order, you’ll receive an email with an upload link. In the upload form, you can provide key project details and choose how you’d like to submit your files.
You may upload your audio files directly using our secure upload zone by dragging and dropping or browsing your computer. Alternatively, you can paste a direct download link to your file archive (such as Dropbox or WeTransfer). Once the form is submitted and all files are accessible, you’re good to go.
I Only Have MP3 Files – Are They OK To Work With?
Yes—if MP3 is the highest‑quality version you have, we can work with it. That said, we strongly prefer high‑quality .WAV files, as they provide the best foundation for professional mixing and mastering.
MP3 files are highly compressed and permanently lose important audio information, especially in the high‑frequency range. While converting an MP3 to a .WAV file changes the format, it does not restore lost quality. Even so, we can still achieve solid results with MP3 files, and we’ll always work with the best material you can provide.
What If I Have Accidentally Sent Wrong Files?
If you’ve uploaded the wrong files, please contact us via email as soon as possible so we can replace them before work begins. This helps ensure a smooth workflow and the best possible results.
If processing has already started and new tracks or stems are required, additional charges may apply. In such cases, we offer specific add‑on options for file replacements, which you can find in the mixing & mastering add‑ons sections.
What Is A Stem Or Stem Audio File?
A stem is a stereo submix made up of a group of related instruments. The term originated in the broadcast industry and refers to combining multiple tracks—such as all drum microphones—into a single stereo file, commonly called a drum stem. When all stems are played together, they recreate the full stereo mix.
During mixing, we internally create stems for each section of your song and process them individually to prepare your mix for strategic mastering. If you need these mixed stems delivered separately (for example, for external stem mastering), you can add the “Mixed Stems Export” add-on to your mixing order.
Which Files Will I Be Getting?
In most cases, you’ll receive three mixed/mastered files per song:
- .WAV 24‑bit / 44.1 kHz – optimized for online streaming and digital distribution
- .WAV 16‑bit / 44.1 kHz – optimized for CD release
- .MP3 320 kbps – high‑quality MP3 for easy sharing and playback
If you book one of our mixing services and prefer not to have your track mastered, simply select the corresponding option in the upload form. If you need additional formats or custom export settings, feel free to contact us. All final files can be downloaded directly from your personal customer page.
Turnaround & Revisions FAQ...
Request A Revision
Turnaround Time – When Will I Get My Finished Mix / Master?
We aim to deliver your finished mix or master within five business days. The standard turnaround time for each service is clearly listed on its respective product page, and mixing projects may take longer if extensive edits are needed.
If you have a specific deadline, simply let us know during checkout or when uploading your files, and we’ll do our best to meet it. For faster delivery, you can also book an express turnaround as a mixing or mastering add‑on. Please note that turnaround times may increase when booking multiple services or multiple songs at once.
What Versions Of The Mix Will Be Printed?
Your engineer will always deliver a full final mix of your song.
If you need alternate versions—such as instrumentals, acapellas, clean or radio edits—these can be ordered separately as mixing add‑ons.
Do You Offer Alternate Mix Versions?
Yes. If you need alternate versions—such as instrumentals, acapellas, clean versions, or radio edits—you can easily add them through our mixing add‑ons.
If you’re unsure which version you need or have a special request, feel free to contact us. We’re happy to help find the right solution for your project.
Can You Send Me Your Mixed Stems?
Yes—mixed stems can be ordered as a mixing add-on. During mixing, we create stems for all sections of your song and process them individually to prepare your mix for strategic mastering.
When exported, these mixed stems will play back exactly like the finished mix when imported into your DAW. If you need the stems delivered as separate files (for example, for external stem mastering or live performance use), simply add the “Mixed Stems Export” option to your mixing order.
What Are The Terms Concerning Revisions?
We offer unlimited revisions per song, ensuring you’re fully satisfied with the final result. In most cases, projects are completed within one or two revision rounds.
If you request changes or have a specific sound in mind, please provide as much detail as possible—include stem names, timestamps, and clear descriptions to help the engineer address your feedback efficiently. A dedicated revision request form is available via the link below.
How Long Does A Revision Take?
Each revision may take up to five business days, depending on the scope of the requested changes. That said, revisions are typically completed much faster—often within 1–3 business days.
We prioritize revision requests over new orders whenever possible and will always do our best to respect any deadlines you’ve shared with us.
